The Politics of the Commons

Abstract: The common/s, as a principle of social organization, is today as the center of radical political debates as an alternative to the logic of capital and the market. In her presentation, Federici will examine the key themes, issues and challenges of the 'politics of the commons,' with special attention to the contemporary construction of 'reproductive commons.'
Bio: Silvia Federici is a feminist writer, teacher, and militant and one of the most important contemporary theorists of capitalism and feminist movements. In 1972 she was cofounder of the International Feminist Collective that launched the campaign for Wages for Housework internationally. Her books include Re-enchanting the World: Feminism and the Politics of the Commons, Caliban and the Witch: Women, the Body and Primitive Accumulation and Revolution at Point Zero. She is a professor emerita at Hofstra University, where she was a social science professor. She worked as a teacher in Nigeria for many years and was also the cofounder of the Committee for Academic Freedom for Africa.
